Tis The Season To Hold Out - By Nick Signorelli

Steelers Fever Exclusive Editorial

This is the time of year that would make me nuts if I were an NFL owner. You spend months and months preparing for the Draft, finding that diamond in the rough. That final piece to your Championship puzzle. Here comes mini camps, and......WOW, Look who's not here. I can, to an extent, see players holding out if they are in the last year of there current deal. I can understand the injury risk, and wanting to get sooner, rather than later. Now, on to the guilty parties.

Terrell Owens, Philadelphia Eagles - OK, he is one of the best players in the league. His Super Bowl performance was one of the best in a long time. BUT, you just signed a 7 year deal last year. LAST YEAR! If you should make more money for playing so well in the Super Bowl, should you have to give some back because you were injured for 5 games? I don't want to hear that you "Out played" your contract. Do contracts say that you can play LESS than 100% at some times? You are paid to play the game the best you can. If you aren't, you shouldn't be playing.

Sean Taylor, Washington Redskins - Sean, your in your second year. That means you haven't earned the right to complain about anything yet. Had you come out and won rookie of the year, MAYBE you could say something. If you were a Pro-Bowler, maybe you could say something. If you started EVERY game, maybe.....well you get where I am going with this. Your getting paid what your worth. Zip your pie-hole and play.

Santana Moss, Washington Redskins - OK, you signed your contract already. You wanted to be traded from NY, you got your wish. You were picked up by a team that got the worse end of the deal, then you skip the chance to start the building process with your QB, Whoever the Skins are going to use. At least you used your head and signed the deal.

Javon Walker, Green Bay Packers - What I find funny about this whole situation is that Brett Favre told Javon he should be there (Thank you NFL.com). I think it is funny that, while sitting at home, Favre can tell someone else that they need to be at practice. Fact is Javon, you have two years left, get over yourself and get to camp.

Anquan Bolden, Arizona Cardinals - To me, this is the strangest situation in the NFL right now. 2003, Anquan is the SECOND WR taken by the Cardinals in the draft. He goes on to win the Rookie of the year (Offensive). And what is his reward? Dennis Green takes Larry Fitzgerald with the 3rd pick in the 2004 draft. Could have taken Big Ben Roethlisberger. Nah, lets get another WR. (Maybe that is the mold the Detroit Lions are going after). It looks to me that Anquan is looking to get out of the desert, and who can blame him. He knows with no QB that team is going no where fast. Does he deserve more money? No, but maybe money isn't the only issue here?

On the other hand...

My Hat is off to Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward. Right now the fact that Hines is under contract for less than $2 Mil this year, makes him the best bargain in the league. He is in Pittsburgh, working out with the team, and being the leader he is. When asked about the contract he said that it was up to the Steelers and his agents. If anyone deserves to hold out it is Hines. He is without a doubt one of the top 5 WR in the game, making less than $2 mil. Hines is a true leader, on an off the field.
