The Longest Day Of The Year For Steelers Fans – By Marc Simon
Steelers Fever Exclusive Editorial
|For those of us who can’t wait for football to come around, the off-week feels like the off-season. It’s even worse when you go into off-week limbo after a loss. It’s like having a bad taste in your mouth you can’t get rid of, no matter how many times you gargle.
The off-week gives everyone a chance to brood about the game. Bad referee calls get magnified. Coaching decisions get over analyzed. Every player screw-up gets nitpicked to death.
For example, thousands of trees have been sacrificed to tell us what we already know to be true about last week’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger continues to look rusty and wary. Coach Bill Cowher made some questionable decisions (to say the least), low-lighted by putting Ricardo Coclough back to receive punts in the fourth quarter (how many of you were moaning over that idea, even before the punt?).
Several Steelers receivers, most notably Nate Washington, played hot potato with the football. Mike Logan deserves to be sent out to pasture for the incredibly immature personal foul he committed before Pittsburgh’s final, unsuccessful drive. Willie Parker is an excellent running back, but needs to give up the celebrations. And so on.
So here’s the question: What will you do on Sunday? A few suggestions:
You might want to watch some of the other NFL games — Baltimore vs. San Diego, and New England vs. Cincinnati come to mind — but frankly, if it’s not the Steelers or the playoffs, who cares? Unless, of course, you’re one of those fantasy fanatics. Or you took the over in the Bengals/Patriots game, as I did, strictly for recreational purposes, of course.
You might use off week Sunday to catch up on that yard work you’ve been putting off, hoping for an early snowfall to cover the leaves. It’s also a good opportunity to spend some quality time with your children. Lacking children, you may want to spend some quality time with your significant other. By the way, a case of beer does not qualify as a significant other.
How about a trip to the Andy Warhol Museum? Let me rephrase that. How about a trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Or, you could do a little shopping. Off week Sunday is a great time to refresh your Steeler gear. With the holiday just around the corner, you’ll want to stock up on Steelers Halloween buckets. And you can never have too many Steelers camouflage neoprene bottle coozies.
Whatever you do, don’t stare at the television. The Steelers are not coming back until October 8, against the San Diego Chargers. Let’s hope the Chargers beat the Ravens this week and get softened up for us in the process. At least that’s something to look forward to.
Like I said, it’s gonna be a long, long week.
